Damn near all ex-jocks come to a time in life when they realize that their day has passed, leaving them fortunatly with an inflated memory of their skills or lack thereof--so the day came for my old ex-classmate, navy buddy, roomate, business partner, Dick Gulley.  I wrote the only poem of my life on his 40th birthday, here tis--

           Lonely at the Top

There was a day, there was a time

when there was a game to play and the glory was mine

from the locker room to the field, the fire of coming combat would surge,

Go Gulley Go the crowd would urge

My feet had wings, my arm was strong,

my head still rings from the roar of the throng

Oh how swift came the day,

when the fleeting glory of youth

left me with no game to play, 

and here I sit, fat and uncouth-

But I'll sit here with my Lite, 

my Winston's close at hand.

My belts a little tight,

but they knew I was the man!

So when the scorer comes to call against my name, 

I'll say I knew the time to stop

i had mine I played the game

but it was Lonely at the Top

Well, Folks, Rex is full of surprises!

Out of the woodwork comes our Will’s Kid Wordsworth, like a complex diamond, revealed one facet at a time, there is more polish in this gem than he would have us know!  Jus’ sayin”.

Yes! Rex is full of surprises!  At lunch today we talked him into reciting his poem.....he did it by memory and oh with mucho gusto!  Yes, Rex is a special man to many of us! dlg

Had two posibilities, missed oportunities to get to know Rex, once at WRHS and once at O-State; thankful for the website; third time is charmed!
